Read the Script

I’m going to show you a great technique that I have just learnt, it’s called the steeple technique because it looks like a steeple, some people call it magnetic fingers because it feels like you have magnets on your fingers. It’s really good.

Firstly, just watch while I demonstrate – it will be your turn next.

 

Start by demonstrating how to hold the hands.

Hold your hands about 20-30cm directly in front of your eyes with your finger interlaced and squeeze tight so your fingers go a bit white and blue like mine are.

Next, I’ll ask you to keep squeezing, then to straighten both index fingers so you make a steeple, and pull them apart, so that the tips are 2-3 cms. apart.

Then you don’t do anything, just see what happens, you don’t have to do anything but it will feel as if you have a magnet on each finger pulling them together. Just like this…really strong magnets, pulling them together, you don’t have to do anything, just notice those magnets pulling them together,

When your fingers touch …..

Like that …. Simply take a deep breath in.

Hold your breath for a few seconds

Then, as you breathe out, close your eyes and lower your hands into your lap.

Blow away any nerves, fears, tensions and notice how everything simply relaxes.

Now it’s your turn.

 

Get your child to have a turn.

Then as you breathe out, close your eyes and lower your hands into your lap.

Blowing away any nerves, fears, tensions and notice how everything simply relaxes.

Now take another deep breath – noticing how you feel stronger, great, hold your breath again.

And as you breathe out (time this with their breathing out) blow away any nerves, any fears, any anxiety and just notice how you feel more and more relaxed.

Take another deep slow breath, noticing how you sit up straighter and feel strong now, hold your breath, and as you breathe out blow away any remaining fears and anxiety, noticing how you relax, you’re doing great…

And just take a moment, feeling calm, confident, capable. Great.

  • You can ask your child to teach someone else how to do this – this will give them a real buzz and really reinforce how to do it and how effective it is.
  • They can use the script, watch the video or just go from memory with your help.
  • Once your child has learnt the breathing technique with magnetic fingers they could just use the breathing and think to themselves “blow away fears, blow away anxiety” as they breath out.
  • This technique can be used in the waiting room and no-one will know they are using it.
