Malcom Douglas Grant Award

The Malcom Douglas Grant Research Fund was established in 2004 by Ms Natalie McConaghy in memory of her nephew, Malcom Douglas Grant. The primary purpose of the Fund is to facilitate research of an international standard into the cause of, or treatments for, patients with Morquio Syndrome, other mucopolysaccharidoses, or other genetic disorders involving bone dysplasias within the lysosomal storage disorders group.
The WCH Foundation is seeking expressions of interest for projects or fellowships which meet the above purpose.
Value of the Award
The Value of the Award will be determined by the Trustees after consideration of applicants and recommendation by the selection panel, but has a guide of between $125,000 – $250,000 total for the Award.
Nature of the Award
The WCH Foundation as Trustees of the MDG Research Fund will Award a recipient to undertake either a PhD, Post-Doctoral or Project at the Women’s and Children’s Hospital, or at another suitable Australian Institution, with the approval of the Trustee.
Selection
The Award will be granted on the basis of merit of the application, including their past research record and the proposed program of research. Applications will be judged by a Selection Panel consisting of three internationally recognized experts (two with expertise in lysosomal storage disorders and one with expertise in the general area of genetics and bone dysplasias), and other personnel as required.
Research being proposed must be:
- Scientifically valid, relevant and significant.
- Timely and achievable.
- Not duplicating other work.
- Using appropriate methodologies.
- Carried out by researchers with the right skills and facilities.
- Providing value for money.
- Relevant to families affected by Morquio Syndrome, other mucopolysaccharidoses, or other genetic disorders involving bone dysplasias within the lysosomal storage disorders group.
Conditions of the Award:
- The Award shall be open to applicants on an Australia-wide basis.
- The Trustee shall have the right to decide not to grant an Award if suitable applications are not received.
- The Award duration will be determined by the Trustee up to a maximum period of three (3) years.
- The Award may consist of a stipend and requisite maintenance costs. Travel, relocation or other incidental expenses will not be covered by the Award.
- The Research Project (and the associated budget) must be approved by the Head of the Department and the Executive Director (or equivalent) of the institution in which the work will be carried out.
- The WCH Foundation will require an annual progress report, and a final report on completion of the project.
- The WCH Foundation will require copies of any publications regarding the research undertaken.
- Support of the WCH Foundation and the Malcom Douglas Grant Fund must be acknowledged in any presentation or publication of the research undertaken during and as a result of this Award.
- The WCH Foundation may review the progress of the research by the recipient at any time. If progress is unsatisfactory, the Foundation may terminate the Award.
