Ayla was a curious child, always trying to keep up with her big sister Maya. Though Maya was a busy and energetic four-year-old, there was something beautifully peaceful and calm about Ayla’s nature that made her truly special.
At just three months old, Ayla’s parents, Linny and Jordy, received devastating news. After a rapid deterioration in lung health that placed her in PICU, Ayla was diagnosed with Alveolar Rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare and aggressive form of cancer. From that moment on, the Michael Rice ward in the Women’s and Children’s Hospital became their second home as Ayla received chemotherapy and other treatments to give her and her family as much time as possible together. Defying all expectations, Ayla gifted her family with two years and five months of cherished moments.
One of those treasured memories happened at our Laklinyeri Beach House, just three weeks before Ayla lost her brave battle with cancer. Energetic and full of life during their stay, Ayla made the most of every moment with her family. They were even able to share this special time with family visiting from overseas, making it all the more meaningful.
Reflecting on their time at the Beach House, Linny said ‘It was not only the house, but the family experiences like the Cockle Train and the Urimbirra Wildlife Park, which really made it special’.
We are honoured to be able to support families receiving end-of-life care through a stay at our Laklinyeri Beach House. These meaningful moments are made possible thanks to the generosity of our supporters and the South Australian community.
We are especially grateful to the HAS Foundation for their incredible support of the memory-making experiences that provide comfort, connection, and treasured family memories.💛

Charlotte Tatton is an emerging artist based in Adelaide.
Working primarily with oil paint, Charlotte explores the intersection of abstraction, still life, and materiality, particularly focusing on 1960s textiles, furniture, and domestic objects. She reinterprets the still life genre by moving away from traditional representation, prioritising formal concerns of flatness, pattern, and colour.
Charlotte merges historical and contemporary visual languages, gleaning from the textures and forms of postwar domestic objects like plastics, polyester, and reflective surfaces, to create fragmented, non-linear spaces through collage and painting. This disruption of traditional compositions investigates the relationship between painted surfaces and illusionistic space, challenging perspective and distorting depth.
‘Patchwork’ is currently on display in the Green Heart Gallery 💚 (Second floor, outside Hospital Cafe).
