A moment for Bec 💛
For Bec, motherhood and her incredible nursing career have been deeply intertwined. Since starting at the Women’s and Children’s Hospital (WCH) in 2007 as a graduate nurse, she’s dedicated herself to caring for families and staff across Surgical Services, including in the Surgical Short Stay Unit and Newland Ward. Now, as a Nurse Manager, her passion for helping and supporting her team is stronger than ever.
Bec finds it most rewarding, being able to watch her children grow, explore, and discover the world around them. But like so many mums, the hardest moments come when her kids are unwell. “As a parent, there’s nothing more challenging than seeing your child in pain,” she shares.
Her family knows firsthand the extraordinary care of the WCH. Her eldest son has been a regular in the Paediatric Outpatients Department, and more recently, one of her twins spent his first week of life in Neonatal Services, requiring additional support. Thanks to the compassionate care she received during those difficult times, Bec shares that she has gained “a much deeper understanding of what our patients and their families go through, and it’s brought a new level of empathy to the way I approach my work.”
To other mums, Bec offers this kind reminder: “Remember to put your own oxygen mask on first. You can’t pour from an empty cup and looking after yourself allows you to be the best version of yourself for your children.”

This Mother’s Day, we’re taking ‘A Moment for Mums’, celebrating the inspiring mothers within our community. To launch the series, we’re highlighting our very own CEO, Verity, pictured with her two sons Jonty (6) and Henry (9)💛
For Verity, Mother’s Day is a time to reflect on the remarkable women who have shaped her life starting with her beloved grandmother, Jeanne, who trained as a nurse at the Women’s and Children’s Hospital (WCH) in the late 1940s. Jeanne’s advice to her grandchildren was simple yet profound, to find their passion. Verity proudly says she has found hers, making a positive impact through her work in the charity sector.
While the transition to motherhood has had its challenges, Verity credits the strong female leaders and mentors in her life for showing her that it’s possible with the right support. “I like to think I’m now helping to create that same supportive environment for our team at the Foundation,” she shares.
Verity’s personal connection to the WCH grew even stronger when her eldest son was diagnosed with a hearing impairment at birth. She remains deeply grateful to the audiology and ENT teams at the WCH, whose dedication has ensured he receives the best possible care and support.
Her advice to mums? “Trust your gut, trust your intuition.”
