Bill is an active, sport-loving 11-year-old growing up on a farm near Bute in South Australia. Whether he’s helping out around the farm or playing his favourite sports, he’s always on the move, just like any other kid his age.

Sport is a big part of who Bill is, which is why it became the inspiration behind his BIG W Heart Token design.

But Bill’s story is also one of resilience.

He was born with primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD), a rare and lifelong condition that affects the respiratory system. For Bill, it also means his major organs are mirrored on the opposite side of his body. Living with PCD requires ongoing treatment and specialised care, something that isn’t always easy from a regional community.

Since the very beginning, the Women’s and Children’s Hospital (WCH) has been a constant in Bill’s life.

“Our family has relied on the Women’s and Children’s Hospital since Bill was born,” says his mum, Steph. “Our first stay was 52 days, including Christmas in intensive care. Over the years, we’ve made countless trips, we don’t even keep track anymore.”

For families like Bill’s, distance adds another layer of challenge.

“The challenges are immense for a family with a child with a rare disease, without the added disadvantages of regional isolation,” Steph explains. “Support during these times is vital.”

Through it all, Bill continues to thrive and a big part of that has been the support services available at the hospital, including Play Therapy.

Play therapists give children like Bill the chance to still feel like kids. They create positive distractions  and help maintain a sense of normality in what can be a really overwhelming environment.

“As a family, we’ve seen just how much this support helps Bill cope and continue to thrive,” shares Steph.

That’s why Bill was so proud to design a BIG W Heart Token, knowing that every token sold helps fund these important services for other children just like him.
