Nicole and Shannon Fleming are all too familiar with the Women’s and Children’s Hospital. Expecting twins, they had known from the early stages they would face a complicated pregnancy.

“We were always told that twins were going to be high risk, but in comparison to what we went through, we had no idea,”  says Nicole.

A routine scan in the early stages identified Twin-to-Twin Transfusion Syndrome and at just 28 weeks, the Flemings and their medical team made the decision that if their girls were to survive, they would need to be delivered soon.

At birth, Eloise weighed just 480 grams, fitting into the palm of her dad Shannon’s hand. But the journey was far from over, both girls facing their own medical challenges. Sadly, Isla passed away 4 weeks after birth, following heart surgery. Eloise survived against all odds.

4 years on, Nicole tells us, “Eloise is tiny, but mighty. She’s the toughest little girl and continues to defy the odds.”

Shannon says they couldn’t have gotten through it all without the support of the amazing Women’s and Children’s Hospital staff.

“When we think about the hospital, it’s where we had the worst experience and the best experience at the same time,” Shannon says.

He adds, “Further research into preventing and supporting premature births, among the many other conditions, would help so many families like ours.”
