Book Week is always a special time of year and this year, children, families and staff embraced the celebration across the Women’s and Children’s Hospital.
From stories shared at the bedside to hands-on classroom activities and a colourful parade of favourite book characters, Book Week brought moments of imagination, creativity and connection to patients throughout the hospital.
Supported by the Women’s & Children’s Hospital Foundation, Book Buddies helped bring the theme of A Symphony of Stories to life, visiting children in the wards and Hospital School classrooms to share the joy of reading.
In the junior primary classroom, students enjoyed readings of Derek and The Emperor’s Egg before exploring the stories through creative activities, including craft projects and lessons on personification. Meanwhile, on the wards, children who were unable to leave their rooms enjoyed one-on-one reading sessions and story-inspired activities, offering a welcome distraction and a chance to simply enjoy a good book.
The celebrations continued with the much-loved Book Week Parade, bringing even more colour and excitement to the hospital.
Children, families and staff came together to dress up as their favourite book characters, filling the hospital with costumes, creativity and smiles. For young patients, a moment like this is something special, a chance to step into the pages of a beloved story, share in the fun and be reminded that even during a hospital stay, there’s always room for a little magic.
