In The Beginning

The Women’s & Children’s Hospital Foundation has a long history of fundraising for and supporting the Women’s and Children’s Hospital, and the children, mums and families the hospital community cares for every day. Poor quality of life and premature death for destitute children were two reasons for the establishment of the Adelaide Children’s Hospital in 1876.

In the same year the newly formed Health Board began investigating the reasons for such a high number of sick children in the colony. The Board determined that a hospital for children was desperately needed, land was secured in North Adelaide, and the foundation stone was laid on 20 June 1878.

“It was not founded in any princely way, but by the voluntary and united efforts of a large number of citizens of Adelaide and South Australia generally”. Dr Alan Campbell.

History Of Giving

On 6 September 1876, a group of seven visionary women, all wives of prominent colonial pioneers (Mesdames Colton, Campbell, Fowler, Jeffries, Knight, Stuckey and Smedley), along with Mary Ashley (a representative of the Church of Christ) and Dr Allan Campbell from the Board of Health met to begin planning for the Adelaide Children’s Hospital.

Over the next two years, this group started a fundraising campaign within the community to raise the £2,500 needed to build the first hospital building. As a result of the community’s effort, the Samuel Way Building was opened with 24 beds in 1879.

In 1989, the Adelaide Children’s Hospital and the Queen Victoria Hospital amalgamated to become the Women’s and Children’s Hospital and our Foundation was again reborn to become known as we are today, the Women’s & Children’s Hospital Foundation. The mission to provide children, mums and families with the very best healthcare still exists today, as does the philanthropy needed to support it.

History Of Caring

The Women’s and Children’s Hospital is celebrating 140 years of caring for South Australia’s families.

Since the laying of the foundation stone in 1878, the Women’s and Children’s Hospital has cared for generations of South Australians. It is a leading provider of specialist care for children with acute and chronic conditions, as well as the State’s largest maternity and obstetric service.

From small beginnings in a two-story building with 24 beds, the Women’s and Children’s Health Network now provides care and community-based services from hundreds of sites across the state. The support of our Foundation extends to every corner of the hospital, from providing leading edge technology and vital equipment to funding key research projects and family-centred support programs.

Since the Hospital was established in the 1870s, the people of South Australia have shown how much they care for our children and their families. Over the past 10 years’ alone the Women’s & Children’s Hospital Foundation has raised more than $36 million dollars in support of your hospital and families in South Australia, the Northern Territory, Broken Hill and the Sunraysia Region in Victoria.

Bequests, in particular, have proved to be one of the most meaningful ways for community members to remember the Women’s & Children’s Hospital Foundation, reflecting a commitment to continuing the tradition of excellence in healthcare. Our work is not possible without the help of our generous supporters and for that we thank you.

The community was justifiably proud of its Children’s Hospital then, as we still are today. The mission to provide children, mums and families with the very best healthcare still exists today, as does the philanthropy needed to support it. Join those early visionaries in supporting your Hospital with a tax deductible donation to commemorate our 140th anniversary.

Support your Hospital.

Inspired by a shared intent to improve the look and feel of the hospital environment of the Women’s and Children’s Hospital (WCH), the Women’s & Children’s Hospital Foundation (WCH Foundation) and the Women’s and Children’s Health Network (WCH Network) partnered to establish an Arts in Health (AIH) Program in August 2008.

The aim of introducing an Arts in Health program into the hospital was to integrate arts into the life of the Women’s and Children’s Hospital to improve people’s health and wellbeing. Today, the program consists of integrated areas which deliver a range of activities throughout the hospital, including:

In January 2010, our Foundation opened the first exhibition in the newly created Blue Heart Gallery (Ground Floor, Zone A, near Allied Health and Hospital School), and through the generous support of our donors we now have five gallery space spread across the hospital.  The WCH Foundation’s Gallery program provides an environment away from the stresses of treatment to distract, entertain and inspire all who pass by. The artworks displayed in the exhibition spaces come from a range of sources – internally from hospital staff, patients (women & children) and their families, through specific Arts in Health activities and externally from local artists and art collectives.

The Hon John Hill MP Minister for Health and Minister Assisting the Premier in the Arts officially launched the Arts in Health Program on 28 January 2010. Next year as we celebrate 10 years of this program, we will delve deeper into the impact each of these programs has had on children, their families and the hospital community.

To celebrate the hospital’s 140-year milestone we are currently running an exhibition on the History of Fundraising in the Yellow Heart Gallery (Level 1, Zone F – past the QV Lecture Theatre). For more information about our exhibitions and other programs within Arts in Health, click here.

With your support, the Foundation invests over $1.5 million annually in research within the Women’s and Children’s Health Network. This year we are celebrating these Research Rockstars and the vital work they do.

Dr David Moore of the Women’s and Children’s Hospital’s Gastroenterology and Paediatric Medicine Department is one of this year’s recipients of a MS McLeod Research Grant. His research is in the most common cause of Chronic Liver Disease, which currently affects up to 20% of overweight and obese children. Dr Moore is seeking to develop a new diagnostic non-evasive method known as the 13C-ketoisocaprote breath test to assess the metabolic capacity of the liver in paediatric patients with Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NFALD).

“Our research team hopes that this this non-invasive breath test will lead to an improved method of monitoring of liver damage in overweight and obese children and their response to treatment.” Dr Moore said.

What this means is that Dr Moore’s research will allow Paediatricians to perform a safe non-invasive breath test to provide early diagnosis for things such as insulin resistance, cardiovascular disease and obesity. Early diagnosis will lead to better treatment and earlier intervention and ultimately better health outcomes for these children.

Dr Moore’s work for the hospital does not end with his vital research project; Dr Moore is also a donor to our Foundation. As one of our regular givers, his contributions help to make the hospital look and feel better every day for children and their families. These contributions don’t just fund transformative research; they also go towards vital hospital equipment and support a range of innovative, family-centred initiatives that continually improve the hospital environment.

“The Foundation is such an important way of supporting clinical and basic research across the Women’s and Children’s Health Network, I would like to encourage all medical staff show their support through regular donation.”

With the support from our donors, we are able fund project such as this one, improving treatments and the hospital environment, making a difference to the lives of families every day.

It truly takes a village to support your Women’s and Children’s Hospital. We rely on the generous contributions made by our fundraising champions in our community. In this edition, we are proud to share just some of the stories of the many inspirational people who make a difference every day.

Below, we are delighted to share the stories of some our amazing community groups:

Golden Angels

This International Woman’s Day, we celebrated the commitment of

the Golden Angels Committee. Over the past five years the Golden Angels have raised a staggering $150,000 in support of Palliative Care Services at the Women’s and Children’s Hospital.

We gathered the committee members, and key supporters and sponsors at The Cathedral Hotel to shine a spotlight on their incredible contribution to our community. It was a privilege to spend the evening with the Golden Angels to thank them for their tireless efforts on behalf of the Foundation and the Palliative and Complex Care families of the Women’s and Children’s Hospital.

Victor Harbor Golf Day

On Friday 1 March, 120 eager golfers joined us at the Victor Harbor Golf Club to raise funds for the WCH Foundation Beach House project at Encounter Lakes. Not even the extremely challenging weather conditions could dampen the spirits of everyone who participated on the day.

The stakes were high with players battling out the ‘Straightest Drive’, ‘Nearest the pin’ and overall team competitions.  Unfortunately, we didn’t see any of our golfers score the elusive ‘hole-in-one’ and drive away in the prized Mitsubishi Eclipse, sponsored by Northpoint Fleurieu.

After the battle on the course, our hungry golfers were treated to a delicious gourmet barbecue and had opportunity to join in the fundraising activities throughout the afternoon.

A big thank you to our major sponsors – Bunnings Victor Harbor, Coastal Landscapes & Fencing, Northpoint Fleurieu, Goolwa Bakery and the Victor Harbor Golf Club for their generous support.

Days like this don’t happen without the support of some very special people and so we say a big thank you to the organisers – the Fleurieu Beach House Team, led by Rosie Hage; the volunteers and to everyone who generously contributed with donations or participated on the course.

The event raised an amazing $12,000 to support our Beach House, so we believe our very deserving families who will visit the Beach House are the overall winners!

Anglers cast their lines in Port Hughes content

Article from Yorke Peninsula Country Times – Tuesday, 6 November 2018

About 100 competitors took to the seas for the Port Hughes Angling Competition on Saturday and Sunday, October 27-28. Anglers tried their best to win longest snapper, longest whiting and longest squid categories as well as other prizes including worst boat launch, most helpful competitor and best boat name.

Conditions on day one were fantastic for fishing, with a high tide late in the afternoon, while day two was slightly more challenging and many reported the fish weren’t interested in biting.

“Sunday evening we returned to the Port Hughes Tavern for presentations and about 30 people enjoyed a few laughs and congratulated the winners in the various categories,” organiser Dave Scutchings said.

“I am very pleased to say we raised $4561.63 for the Women’s & Children’s Hospital Foundation. “The money will go directly to the women and kids who are fighting all sorts of battles on a daily basis and certainly need and appreciate the donation.”

Lara Scutchings

Mr Scutchings thanked all supporters and sponsors, as well as his wife Nat and children Max and Lara who helped manage the event.

“At this stage we are thinking of holding next year’s event on the last Saturday in October as a one-day ‘Super Saturday’ followed by ‘Sunday Fun-day’ which will be more about fun than serious fishing,” he said.

Results

In partnership with Adelaide based Mackbel Films, we set out to create a film that captures the complexity and humanity of the Women’s and Children’s Hospital. From the depths of the hallways used by Building Services, to the Security team, and Food and Beverage staff working behind the scenes, right through to the volunteers, educators, administration and clinical staff who work on the frontlines, we visited each and every corner of your hospital to bring you their stories.

The result is a 3-minute video featuring a unique backing track composed just for this project by Timms Tunes, with vocals by children from The Studio and Star Factory.

Thank you to everyone who helped with this beautiful video! Join the celebration and help us share the wonderful work of your Hospital community!

The next time you enjoy a cake or fresh roll in the Rainbow Café at the Women’s and Children’s Hospital, take a moment to think of volunteers like Shirley Heading who for almost 30 years has been giving her time to support the children, mums and families of South Australia.

After relocating from Adelaide to Tumby Bay to run the local caravan park, Shirley first became involved in the local auxiliary raising funds for what was then the Adelaide Children’s Hospital.

Women’s & Children’s Hospital Foundation supporter, Shirling Heading.

“I got involved in 1990 when I became Treasurer and Secretary of the Tumby Bay Auxiliary. I really enjoyed the functions and meetings and I liked raising money to help the children.” Shirley says.

In 1999 Shirley returned to Adelaide and became Region 1 Chairman, coordinating the 12 auxiliaries within metropolitan Adelaide. Through the years that followed, she continued dedicating her time through numerous auxiliary roles until retiring in 2014.

“The highlight for me was serving as State President from 2000-2002. At this time there were 72 auxiliaries in South Australia raising around $400,000 each year. There was healthy competition between the different groups but we all knew that every cent would help.”

It was after injuring her foot in 2004 that Shirley was first invited to volunteer in the Rainbow Café and now, 15 years later, she is still coming in every week to help feed the families, friends and staff at the Hospital.

“I don’t stop!” Shirley laughs. “I arrive at 5.30am twice a week, and on a typical day I can butter three dozen rolls, 16 focaccias and 16 finger buns, as well as making 10 salad boxes and pricing up all the cakes.”.

Having dedicated her life to making a difference to the children and families in the Hospital, for Shirley it was an easy decision to leave a gift in her will to the Women’s & Children’s Hospital Foundation.

“I have more or less devoted my life to the Hospital and I’ve loved it. I decided to leave a bequest to the Women’s & Children’s Hospital Foundation because I’m community-minded and I’d like to be remembered for that,” says Shirley. “My nephew is my power of attorney, and I have made sure he knows about my wishes.”.

As well as her regular volunteering, Shirley enjoys keeping up to date with the latest news by attending special events organised by the Women’s & Children’s Hospital Foundation for members of the Golden Hearts Bequest Society.

“I enjoy being a member of the Golden Hearts because it’s good to hear news from the Foundation. The guest speakers at events are interesting and I like being part of a smaller group of like-minded people,” Shirley says.

“I would recommend leaving a bequest to the Women’s & Children’s Hospital Foundation to anyone because the Foundation does a lot for the Hospital and you can be sure that the money will go to help the children. It doesn’t matter how much you can give – big or small it all helps!”.

As this year ends and we look forward to to the year ahead, many of us are contemplating resolutions that will improve our lives in the coming year. A lot of New Year’s resolutions are hard to keep – but making a Will is a resolution you can easily accomplish!

A Will is a legal document that sets out how your assets will be dealt with when you pass away. Writing a Will is the single most important thing you can do to protect the future of your loved ones and ensure your wishes are known.  A little bit of thought now will give you peace of mind and avoid unnecessary conflict later on.

Fortunately, making a Will is easier than ever so what better time than January to contact your solicitor and put your plans in place?

Once you have made provision for your loved ones, you might consider including a gift to charity in your Will – for example to acknowledge an organisation that has assisted you or other family members during your lifetime.

The Women’s and Children’s Hospital was founded on philanthropy and, today, gifts in Wills left to the WCH Foundation play an important role in ensuring that women, children and their families continue to receive the very best care possible.

Gifts in Wills of all sizes make a wonderful difference and you can choose to leave a specific sum of money, a percentage of your estate or the residual of your estate after all other payments and charges have been distributed. We will ensure that your gift is used carefully and with the utmost respect.

It truly takes a village to support your Women’s and Children’s Hospital. We rely on the generous contributions made by our fundraising champions in our community. In this edition, we are proud to share just some of the stories of the many inspirational people who make a difference every day.

Recently, some amazing community friends held events to raise funds for the hospital. Read their inspiration stories below.

Team Ohana Headshave

When your friend is diagnosed with a serious illness, how can you help? This is a story of mateship where actions definitely speak louder than words!

When one of their classmates was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, his friends wanted to do something to both support him and to raise funds for the Michael Rice Centre to help other patients also receiving treatment. On Friday 28 September, a group of 60 Year 11 Pembroke Senior School students did just that by shaving their heads to raise funds for the Michael Rice Centre at the Women’s and Children’s Hospital.

The support within their school community has been phenomenal having now reached $23,100!

Thank you to these amazing young men whose efforts and substantial contribution to the Michael Rice Centre will benefit many families now and in the future.

Oaks Day is a winner

The Spring Racing Festival saw two of our community support groups for our Beach House project host an Oaks Day Luncheon in both McLaren Vale and Victor Harbor.

The Fleurieu Beach House Team hosted one of these at Eat @ Whalers Restaurant, which raised an impressive $11,500. More than 100 guests enjoyed great food and wine in the beautiful surroundings overlooking the bay and Granite Island. As with any Spring Racing event, the awards for Best Fascinator, Best Dressed and Most Flamboyant were hotly contested with the guests embracing the traditional Oaks Day floral and floaty theme.

Special guests, Judy and Russell Ward, shared the story of their grandson, Sam who fought a courageous battle with a rare neurological degenerative disease. Although Sam died in 2005 at age 4, his memory lives on as his grandparents vividly recounted both the wonderful and challenging times the whole family experienced. The opportunities for the family to get away and make precious memories together are still the most treasured and this is why the Beach House project has become so important to their whole family.  Their daughter and son-in-law, Michelle and Martin Roberts, have been instrumental in this project as one of the Founding Families.

A special thank you to Major Sponsors – Harcourts South Coast, South Coast Realty & Coastal Landscapes and Fencing; MC, Graeme Jameson (Fleurieu and Hills Insurance) and Auctioneer Rob Heaslip (South Coast Realty) for their generous support of the event. Thanks to Jacki (Coastal Landscapes and Fencing) for also sharing the vision and plans for landscaping and outdoor play areas of the Beach House.

To the Fleurieu Beach House Committee – Olivia, Caz & Pippa, we say a very big thank you for your vital commitment and support.

Meanwhile, at Ekhidna Wines in the McLaren Vale another group of frocked up guests raised funds at their Oak Day Luncheon. Attended by over 50 people it was a fun day of games and fundraising during the races, with a fabulous fashion show by Gorgeous Soles in McLaren Vale. Guests raised over $8,500 for our Beach House project.

Thank you to the organising committee for donating the time to pull together and host the event, including: Natalie Jones, Kate Barnett and Haley Reynolds of We Connect Property; Elle Brown of Gorgeous Soles; Christina Repetti of the Old Bush Inn in Willunga; Mei Ling of Helivista; Vicky Vasarelli of Vasarelli Cellar Door Restaurant; and Hazel Wainwright.

A follow-up event is planned in the New Year on Friday, 8 February so save the date for what promises to be another fun fundraiser with the McLaren Vale community.

2018 Baker-Gordon Charity Shield

On Sunday 18 November, we held the 2nd Annual Baker Gordon Charity Shield at Payneham Cricket Oval. Coinciding with this year’s Centenary of Armistice celebrations, the Army and Air Force teams took to the field for a T20 cricket match in support of the hospital community and our Beach House project.

His Excellency, the Honourable Hieu Van Le, Governor of SA met all the players before the coin toss had the Air Force team up to bat first. Final score: Army 79 – Air Force 76, which is now one all for both teams. 2019 is sure to see friendly rivalry as the position of Baker-Gordon Charity Shield top dog is again up for grabs.

Thank you to our sponsors: Defence SA, Veterans SA, the Norwood, Payneham and St Peters Council, Payneham ‘Dukes’ Crickets Club, Viking Rentals and Veolia for their support of this event. We look forward to working with you all again next year.

Thank you also to our organising committee for the hard work in pulling the event together.
